OUR Scholarship Judges Training
OUR Scholarship Judges Training
Overview
The context is based on a real life training scenario for OUR Scholarship, a nonprofit organization, in which I currently serve as the Committee Lead. The organization recruits new judges for each scholarship cycle to score applicants and select scholarship winners. This helps to foster an objective scoring process. The new judges will not have any prior knowledge of the scoring process, therefore, some type of onboard training would be needed to provide them with the information in order for them to perform their tasks as judges successfully.
Audience: Newly recruited judges for the organization
Tool Used: Articulate Rise
Project Length: 2 weeks
Year: 2020
Design Concept
Content was chosen based on the experiences and feedback of prior judges, myself included before I became the Committee Lead. There are 3 major skills that judges will need to know: How to analyze the application, how to use the score sheet, and how to manage forms. It was important to include real life examples of the application and score sheet along with text for communicating how to utilize both forms for the most accurate representation. Activities focused on assessing Judges' understanding and some application practice. There was not a huge focus on application, since we wanted the judges to do that more during the actual real life process. There can be other variables that are unique to each judging experience depending on the individual and application information. Therefore, we did not dive into too many scenario-based examples to keep it more universal and simple. A video tutorial was most appropriate to show new judges how to manage their forms with Google Drive since it involved following a step by step process in using the technology. This resulted in a clean, simple, and professional visual look to keep the focus on content. Lastly, Judges will work remotely and may be located anywhere in the US. This determined the need for a virtual, asynchronous platform such as Rise.
Development Process
I was the subject matter expert (SME). With the data from previous feedback and experiences, I Jumped right into development without the storyboard or wireframe. I was able to bring concepts to life immediately through developing them.
Theories Applied
Andragogy - ensured that the content is relevant and useful to the new judges' roles.
Targeted cognitive engagement. Engagement doesn't always mean gamification or making it "fun." As long as the content is interesting, the audience will be engaged. The reasoning is that it will be interesting because it is relevant and useful to the audience.
Chunked information into sections to help prevent cognitive overload.
Takeaways
I received great feedback from the board. For future iterations, I would remove the locked navigation for more user freedom. I would also split the video into smaller separate parts instead of including it all in one. Of course, content would be updated accordingly.
